Stop your pump killing itself: dry-run protection explained

A pump that runs out of water doesn't stop. It keeps spinning, pumping nothing, until something inside it gives up. If your place runs on tanks — house supply, stock water, a bore feeding a header tank — a dry tank doesn't just mean no water. It often means no water and a dead pump, discovered at the same moment. Why running dry destroys a pump
Water isn't just the thing a pump moves. It's also the pump's lubricant and its cooling system. The mechanical seal that keeps water out of the motor relies on a film of water to run cool; the impeller housing sheds its heat into the flow passing through it.
Take the water away and the seal runs dry against itself, heats up in seconds, and scores or cracks. Heat builds in the housing with nothing to carry it off. In a plastic-bodied pressure pump the housing itself can deform. A submersible bore pump has it worst: it's designed to be surrounded by water, and dry it cooks in its own casing. The failure is quiet — no bang, no smoke you'll ever see down a bore. Just a pump that hums and moves nothing, or trips its breaker, or simply never works again. By the time you notice, the damage is done, and pump repairs have a way of costing most of a new pump.
The brutal part is the timing. Pumps run dry precisely when water is scarce — the dry spell, the leak, the trough valve stuck open overnight. The moment you can least afford to lose the pump is the moment you lose it.
The protection ladder, dumb to smart
A float switch: the ten-dollar bodyguard. A float on a cable hangs in the source tank, wired into the pump circuit. Water drops below the set point, the float tips, the pump loses power. Simple, cheap, no electronics to fail. Its limits: it protects against exactly one condition at one level, the cable and pivot are moving parts in dirty water and do eventually stick, and it tells you nothing. The pump just stops, silently, and stays stopped.
Dry-run sensing in the pump controller. Most modern pressure controllers — the box on top of the pump that starts it when a tap opens — include loss-of-prime or dry-run protection. The controller notices the pump is running but no water is moving, cuts power, and usually retries later. If you're buying a new pressure pump, insist on this; it's the difference between a controller and a fuse. Its limits: it acts after the pump has already run dry (briefly, but repeatedly if it keeps auto-retrying against an empty tank), and again, nothing tells you it happened. Many a household has found the controller faithfully cutting out for two days before anyone asked why the pressure was odd.
Level sensor plus smart cut-off plus alert. The full version: a level sensor in the source tank feeds a controller that stops the pump before the water reaches the intake, and sends the reading and the alarm to your phone. The pump never runs dry at all — protection becomes prevention. You also get the level history, which usually reveals the real problem: the slow leak, the trough that sticks every few weeks, the usage pattern that says the tank was always going to run out on Saturday. The alert matters as much as the cut-off
A cut-off saves the pump. It does not save your weekend. A stopped pump that nobody knows about is an empty header tank on Saturday night, dry troughs in the far paddock, and a house with no pressure — with the fault now urgent and the cause a mystery until someone drives the line.
This is the argument for putting the alert on equal footing with the protection: the float switch that just stops, and the controller that silently cuts out, both convert "pump destroyed" into "water outage you discover the hard way". The phone message that says "source tank low, pump stopped" at 2 pm converts it into an errand. Matching protection to your setup
Submersible bore pump. Highest stakes: the pump is expensive, replacing it means pulling the bore, and you can't hear it struggling. Bores also recover slowly, so a pump can outpace the bore's inflow even when nothing is "wrong". Use proper dry-run protection (probe or flow-based, or a controller rated for bores) rather than a bare float, and treat an alert as essential — everything about a bore failure is invisible.
Surface transfer pump. The classic tank-to-tank or dam-to-tank setup. A float switch in the source tank is the sensible minimum, and because transfer pumps are often run on timers or left running "till it's done", they're prime candidates for running dry unattended. Level sensing at both ends, with the pump driven by the destination tank's needs and locked out by the source tank's level, is the setup that ends the babysitting — and the first step towards monitoring the whole farm water system.
Household pressure pump. Usually protected by its controller's dry-run function; the gap is the silence. A level sensor on the supply tank warning you at, say, one-quarter full means the controller's cut-out becomes a backstop you never actually reach.
Wiring a float or sensor into anything beyond a plug-in controller is electrical work — a job for a licensed electrician, not a Saturday experiment on a 240 V pump circuit.
The short version
Water is your pump's lubricant and cooling in one, so a dry run wrecks seals and cooks motors quietly — usually during the exact water shortage you can least afford it. Protection runs from a float switch (cheap, silent, one-trick) through controller dry-run cut-outs (standard on decent pressure pumps, still silent) to level sensing with a smart cut-off that stops the pump before it ever runs dry and tells your phone why. The cut-off saves the pump; the alert saves the weekend. Fit both.
