The sensor: measure the level, not just "full or empty"

You've got three real options, and one to avoid.

Ultrasonic, top-mounted — the default. A small sensor sits in the top of the tank and pings the water surface, measuring the distance down. It never touches the water, so nothing corrodes or fouls, and it works the same in poly, steel or concrete. You get the actual level as a number, not a light. For nine tanks out of ten, this is what I'd fit.

Submersible pressure sensor — for the awkward ones. It sits at the bottom and reads the weight of water above it. More accurate, and better for very tall, narrow or oddly shaped tanks where an ultrasonic beam struggles. The catch: it lives in the water and needs a cable down the inlet, so it's more to install and more to go wrong.

Float switch — skip it. A float that flips a switch at "full" or "empty" tells you nothing until you're already at the limit. By the time the empty light comes on, the damage is done. You want the trend — is the level dropping faster than it should? — and a switch can't give you that. Pay the small bit extra for a real level reading.

The link is the bit everyone gets wrong

This is where city-shop advice falls apart. Every "smart tank monitor" review assumes the tank is ten metres from a WiFi router. On a real property the tank is 200 metres away behind a steel shed and your WiFi barely reaches the back verandah. WiFi was never built for this — it's short-range by design, and a tank sensor on WiFi is a sensor that drops out. Two links actually work in the bush, and the right one depends on your layout:

Long-range low-power radio — my first pick if you've got a receiver. A purpose-built radio link carries a small reading kilometres, through trees and over a hill, on almost no power. The sensor sleeps, wakes for a second to send its number, sleeps again — which is exactly why it runs a year or more on a battery. You put one small receiver somewhere central that has power and internet (the house, a shed with WiFi), and every tank on the place reports to it. No SIM, no monthly fee, no coverage worries between tank and receiver. For a property with several things to watch, this is the one that pays off.

Cellular (a SIM in the sensor) — for the genuinely remote single tank. If you've got one tank kilometres from anything, with no receiver in radio range, a small cellular module that sends straight to the cloud is simpler. The trade-offs are real: it chews more battery (so it needs solar), it needs mobile coverage at the tank, and it carries a data plan. Out here, where 5G or 4G is often the only internet a property has anyway, cellular's a fair call for a lone outlier — just don't default to it for tanks a radio could reach for free.

The rule: choose the radio for the distance and the power you've got, not for the feature list on the box. A sensor that can't get its reading home is a paperweight, no matter how nice the app is.

Battery and power: plan for "set it and forget it"

The fastest way to stop trusting your monitoring is a flat battery you didn't know about. If you're climbing a ladder to swap cells every few months, you'll stop — and you're back to guessing. Size the power for years, not months.

A well-built radio sensor that sleeps between readings genuinely runs a year-plus on a battery, because it's awake for maybe a second an hour. A tiny solar panel makes it effectively permanent. A cellular sensor needs more, so solar isn't really optional. And whatever you fit, it should report its own battery level so the system warns you before it goes dark. A monitor that can go silent without telling you is worse than no monitor — you'll trust it right up until the moment it's already failed.

Alerting: a reading nobody sees is useless

This is the part the cheap gear skimps on, and it matters most. Logging a level to a dashboard you never open does nothing. The system has to push — a text, an app notification, an email — the moment something's wrong. And "wrong" is more than just "empty."

Set alerts that earn their keep:

  1. Low level. Tell me at 30 percent, not zero — I want time to cart water or get the pump looked at before the trough's dry.
  2. Dropping when it shouldn't be. A level falling overnight with no draw on means a leak or a stuck valve. Catching the rate of change is where monitoring beats a dipstick — a weekly gauge reading would never see it.
  3. Filling when it shouldn't, or not filling when it should. Pump's run-on, or pump's failed. Either way, know now.
  4. Sensor's gone quiet. No reading for a few hours is itself an alert. Silence is data.

And it gets cheaper at scale: once that central receiver is up, each extra radio sensor you add is just the sensor — no new SIM, no new plan.

Here's the part that should shape your whole decision: a water tank is just a number coming off a sensor in a paddock. Once you've built the path that gets that number to your phone, the same path carries anything else worth watching — a fuel tank, a trough or dam level, whether the front gate's open, how long the pump's been running, the temperature in the feed shed or cool room (wireless temperature monitoring for fridges, freezers and sheds is the same idea), soil moisture, a door, a motion sensor.

That's why I'd steer you away from a sealed, single-purpose "tank monitor" that only ever does tanks. If it matters, monitor it: the hard work is the link and the alerting, and you only build that once.
