What does water tank monitoring cost?
The honest answer: it depends on your site, not on the sensor. Distance, power and how many tanks you want to watch drive the price. The sensor that reads the water is the cheap part. Here is what moves the number, so nothing surprises you on the quote.

The short version
Anyone quoting a single "from $X" without asking about your site is guessing. The cost is set by how hard it is to get the reading back, not by the sensor. A couple of tanks near the house is cheap. A bore two kilometres out, over a hill, with no power and no signal, is not.

What actually drives the cost
Five things move the number. The sensor is only one of them, and it is the smallest.
The sensor itself
The part that reads the water is well-understood, low-cost hardware. It is the cheap part. If a quote is dominated by the sensor price, something else is being hidden.
Getting the reading back
This is the real cost. A short cable is cheap. Long-range wireless costs more. A cellular link with its own SIM costs more again. Distance and line of sight decide which one you need, and that decides the price.
Power at the tank
Mains power at the tank is the easy, cheap case. No power means solar and battery to keep the sensor and the link alive for years, and that hardware adds to the setup.
Number of tanks
The dashboard and network are shared, so the first tank carries most of the setup. Each extra tank is mostly just another sensor, far cheaper than starting over.
Own it or rent it
An upfront price versus a monthly fee. Small monthly fees per tank add up fast over a few years. Better to own the gear than pay rent on it forever.
Getting the reading back: where the money goes
Measuring the water is easy. The engineering you are paying for is getting that number back to your phone, reliably, from a spot with no power and no signal, for years, without you climbing anything. That is why two tanks that look identical can cost very different amounts.
Think of it as a relative scale, not fixed prices. A short, clear line of sight with power at the tank sits at the cheap end. Push the tank a long way out, over a hill, on solar, and the link hardware climbs. Add a cellular link on its own SIM for a truly remote bore and you are higher again, plus a small ongoing data cost. Same water, very different job.
The good news for most farms is that a low-power radio link handles the paddock, the dam and the back-block bore without paying for cellular on every tank. No signal at all is the case it is built for. Detail in monitoring where there is no mobile signal.

The platform is shared
One dashboard, one gateway, one network watches every tank on the property. You build that once. It is the bulk of the first tank's cost and none of the next.
Each extra tank is mostly a sensor
Adding the second, fifth or tenth tank is another sensor and its link onto a system that already exists. That is a fraction of standing up the platform from scratch.

Subscription versus own it
Some systems come in cheap upfront and then charge a monthly fee per tank. That looks good on day one. Run the numbers across a few years and a handful of tanks, and the ongoing fee can quietly cost more than owning the gear outright ever would. You end up renting access to your own water level.

You paid once, it keeps working. A quote should always tell you which model it is, because the sticker price alone does not.
DIY versus installed
On a simple site, a tank near the house with power and clear signal, you can fit a sensor yourself and save the install cost. That is a fair saving and we will not pretend otherwise. If that is your situation, do it.
The risk is the part that is easy to get wrong and expensive to find out late. Siting the link so the readings make it back. Sealing the sensor against weather and stock. Setting the threshold so a run-dry alert reaches you with time to act, not after the trough is empty. Get any of those wrong and the saving is gone the first time a reading stops or an alert never fires. On the hard sites, a proper install pays for itself the first time it catches a failing pump before you do.
The real cost is not monitoring
The number that matters is not the quote. It is what a tank costs you when nobody is watching it. A trough that runs dry with stock on it. A pump that fails and empties a tank overnight. A house tank you run out of. Any one of those can be worth more than the whole setup.
